THE SACRED STORY OF SHRI TAMRAGAURI

✦

In the ancient legends, Lord Shiva gifted the powerful Atmalinga to Ravana, which was ultimately placed firmly at Gokarna by Lord Ganesha, establishing the Mahabaleshwar temple.

Goddess Parvati, in search of Lord Shiva, arrived at Gokarna from the Tamranchal Parvat (Copper Mountain), taking the divine form of Shri Tamragauri.

To establish the unparalleled spiritual significance of Gokarna, the Goddess is depicted holding a balance (scales), weighing the sanctity of Gokarna against that of Varanasi (Kashi).

Though not traditionally a Shakti Peeth from the fall of Sati's body parts, Tamragauri remains one of the most vital shrines of the Divine Mother, proving Gokarna's immense sanctity in the cosmos.
